Seeing the Light in Life

Led by Steve Radley

The gift of photography can enable you to discover your own life and surroundings in new ways.

Photography is taken from the Greek words meaning ‘to draw’ and ‘light’, so literally means, drawing with light. The retreat will use light as a metaphor for life and explore ways of using the camera to help us see light and life in its many forms.

A digital camera will be required to participate, but anything will do. It can be a smartphone, compact camera or larger DSLR camera. All levels of photography experience are welcome, whether you are a beginner or an experienced photographer. There will be a daily session giving technical guidance for creativity. The images created will be used in the daily worship through digital projection. One high quality image will be printed for each participant from each of the three photography walks as a special keepsake.

Most photography will be outdoors and retreatants will share walks with cameras. We hope we have picked the best dates to give you peak autumn colour with our lovely local woodlands. There are also indoor options for people with mobility difficulties.

During the retreat participants will keep the greater silence (from compline until after breakfast each day) and the Eucharist will be celebrated twice.

Steve Radley is an Anglican Priest and award winning photographer who combines the creativity of photography with theology and his postgraduate study of War and Psychiatry. He aims to help people find in new ways the light and beauty present in their life, helping to promote spiritual and mental wellbeing. He has served as a member of the Lee Abbey Community, in parish ministry and in the RAF Chaplains’ Branch where he developed an interest in mindfulness meditation. On leaving the military he undertook professional photographic training to turn his lifelong passion into a business that supports a pioneer ministry. The accessibility of photography (drawing with light) provides a powerful tool to help us slow down and see the light of life in new and exciting ways.
