Finding Nazareth

Led by Richard Carter

Nazareth is the hidden place of formation where Jesus himself discovered his relationship with God and his calling. We know very little about what happened in Nazareth but we do see all that was nurtured and grew within Jesus. Before he spoke his message, Jesus lived it in Nazareth. In this retreat we will be discovering together this "Nazareth time" - the time and space and stillness that we need to let the seed that is planted find the soil it needs to grow within us. The retreat will be based around the simple contemporary rule of the Nazareth Community:

  • Silence
  • Service
  • Scripture
  • Sacrament
  • Sharing
  • Sabbath
  • Staying With

The aim of the retreat is to find within our own lives that contemplative space in which we can listen and grow. This will be a silent led retreat with daily addresses and liturgy - a meditation on meeting God in our everyday lives and the lives of one another.

Richard Carter is Associate Vicar for Mission at St Martin-in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Square. His ministry includes working closely those who are homeless and refugees and the pastoral care of the many people who come through the open doors of this church on the edge of London's most public Square. Richard is the founder of the Nazareth Community- whose members gather from everyday life to seek God in contemplation and to learn to live generously. Before coming to St Martin's Richard was a member of the Melanesian Brotherhood and Anglican order, living a life of simplicity, service and prayer in the South Pacific, visiting Sheldon with the Melanesian Sisters and Brothers to perform The Passion of our Lord in 2005. He is the author of The City is My Monastery: A Contemporary Rule of Life, Canterbury Press 2019; In Search of the Lost : The Death and Life of Seven Peacemakers of the Melanesian Brotherhood. Canterbury Press 2006 and editor of Who is My Neighbour? The Global and Personal Challenge. SPCK 2018.
