Entering Advent

Led by Carys Walsh

Advent is a powerful and significant season for our faith, as we draw close to the coming of God with us in Christ. The landscape of Advent is one of surrender, open-hearted discovery, epiphany and encounter

In this retreat, we will have the opportunity to reflect on Advent and prepare our hearts for the coming weeks, through the use of poetry, including the poetry of R. S. Thomas and Gerard Manley Hopkins. Our time together will include reflecting on how the language of poetry can help us explore faith, and considering Advent themes through the lens of poets. There will also be plenty of time to allow poetry to speak to us, and discover the presence of the coming Christ.

This is a silent retreat with daily addresses and offices and one Eucharist. There will be a few appointments available for pastoral conversations with the retreat leader.

Carys Walsh has long been inspired by how poetry can open up to us the depths of faith, and she credits poetry with bringing her ‘home’ when her faith was in transition. Carys practised as psychotherapist, taught in a theological college and for many years has worked in discernment for ordination in the Church of England. She is an assistant priest in the Diocese of Peterborough. Her books include the 2020 "Frequencies of God - walking through Advent with RS Thomas"
