The Wound of Blessing

What can the bible bring to our experience of trauma, and how do we seek out blessing within and through our woundedness? Many of those who minister in the Church, along with many who seek a living faith, have lived experience of trauma. This may include psychological, emotional, physical or spiritual wounding with lasting repercussions in everyday life and experience. The addresses in this retreat attempt to bring biblically-based spiritual insights to the experience of trauma and to consider ways of going beyond mere survival to recovering faith in God and the God’s goodness. The addresses will refer to the Genesis story of the flood, the books of Jonah and Job and the Psalms as well as the promises and blessings of the Gospels and Epistles.
It will be a silent retreat with addresses, daily offices and one Eucharist.
There will be some 1:1 spiritual direction sessions available with the retreat leader, but this is not intended as a therapy retreat and participants need to be sufficiently resourced on their own trauma journey to engage safely with the material of the retreat.
Angela Tilby is a broadcaster, writer, theological educator and priest of the Church of England. After a career in the BBC as a radio and television producer, she was ordained in 1997 and became Vice-Principal of Westcott House in Cambridge where she taught Early Church History and Spirituality. After four years as Vicar of St Bene’t’s Church, Cambridge she became Diocesan Canon of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. She is a Canon Emeritus of Christ Church and a Canon of Honour Emeritus of Portsmouth Cathedral. She is a Visiting Scholar of Sarum College, Salisbury. Her latest book Good Faith - why England needs its Church was published earlier this year. She contributes regularly to the BBC’s Thought for the Day and writes a regular column for the Church Times.
