Hallelujah, I’m sixty now!

Led by Nicola Slee

Hallelujah, I’m sixty now! (Mary Oliver)

We are all ageing from the moment we are born; but we are perhaps unlikely to consider ageing as such until later in life, unless circumstances such as ill-health or the sudden loss of someone important to us, compels us to.

This retreat is for anyone who would like to consider the challenges and joys of ageing, but is designed particularly for those in the so-called ‘third’ or ‘fourth ages’. It will draw on a wide range of resources, particularly poetry, to open up fresh perspectives on, and approaches, to ageing. We will consider a variety of images and metaphors of ageing, and explore what Christian faith brings to the growing awareness of our mortality and finitude, helping us to live our ageing in a spirit of positivity.

Details about the structure: Sessions will combine input and opportunities for conversation; there will be some structured silence as well as opportunities for one-to-one meetings with the retreat conductor. Some worship will be related to the theme of the retreat.

Nicola Slee is a poet and theologian who has published widely in the fields of feminist and practical theology, spirituality and poetics. She has considerable experience of leading retreats as well as acting as a spiritual director. She has recently retired as Director of Research at the Queen’s Foundation for Ecumenical Theological Education, Birmingham, and Professor of Feminist Practical THeology, Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. She is currently working on a book of poems, prayers and reflections on ageing.
